The 'New' Book Report

Our school is beginning the transition of moving to a 1:1 model of instruction.  In a previous post I discussed our readiness for this transition.  Each student in three of our classrooms will receive an iPad this Friday.  We have some fun activities planned for the students to get them acclimated to the process of using the iPads for their school work.

One idea that our literacy coach, Emily Anderson (@eandersoniu), came up with was to have groups of students 'write' their book report using the iMovie app for iPad.  Students work together to make a storyboard, include text/pictures, and produce the iMovie.  The teacher is there as a support but the students are the lead writers, editors, and producers of the iMovie book report.  Very cool way to have students use technology to produce and showcase their learning!!

What other ways do your students showcase their learning, other than a traditional book report?

'Lincoln'

Tonight, we went out to eat and watch 'Lincoln' with friends of ours.  It is one of the best movies I have seen in a long time.  Growing up I heard my grandfather talk a lot about Abraham Lincoln and what kind of leader he was for our country during one of its most turbulent times.  While listening to my grandfather speak, the thing that stuck out more than his leadership skills was just the kind of man he was to so many people.  Numerous books were read by my grandfather about the man Lincoln became and I was fortunate to have some of those books passed on to me. Sure, the movie 'Lincoln' showed what kind of leader he was, but I think it solidified what kind of man he was for our country.  We could certainly use some of that leadership ability in our government right now.

Daddy and Daughter Day

There aren't many benefits (if any) of my wife and I working for different school districts.  Our vacations very rarely match which causes some trouble.  One of the few benefits is that I get to have a Daddy and Daughter day with our youngest, Allison.  Today, she chose to eat at a local pizza buffet which also has games to play. We had a GREAT time together.  I'm sure one of these days I'll look back on our Daddy and Daughter days and wish they were still here.  My goal is to make sure I have plenty of these days before it's too late.

Back Home Again in Indiana

We took our time getting up and around on the last day of our trip.  We left Pigeon Forge at about 10:00 a.m. and said goodbye to the mountains.  I don't mind the drive home from Pigeon Forge.  It's not too long and the girls are pretty good travelers, as long as the iPads have full batteries.
As we got closer to home it was clear that we had a lot of snow still on the ground.  This is a picture near the entrance of Spring Mill State Park.  Tonight I'm catching up on emails, Twitter, and my blog.

Day 1 - Waterpark

We decided to get out of town for a few days and travel to Pigeon Forge, Tennessee.  Normally we stay in my parents' time share at Bent Creek but unfortunately they were booked.  It turned out to be a blessing in disguise because we were able to find a hotel with an indoor water park.  The girls absolutely loved it!
